Internoise 2019 - 50ª Tecniacústica 2019

The Municipal Palace of Congress of Madrid -IFEMA Palacio Municipal- hosted the sessions of the INTERNOISE 2019 Congress -49th International Congress and Exhibition on Noise Control Engineering- sponsored by the I-INCE -International Institute of Noise Control Engineering- that has been organized by the Spanish Acoustic Society -SEA-

In the afternoon of June the 16th was held the opening ceremony initiated by the President of the Congress and President of the SEA, Antonio Pérez-Lopez, who on behalf of the Spanish Acoustic Society welcome all the attendees to this congress. as well as to  the city of Madrid. He then expressed his gratitude to I-INCE for trusting the SEA to organize this important congress, that is being held for the first time in Spain, and said ¡A great birthday gift, as the Spanish Acoustic Society celebrates its 50th anniversary this year ! He also expressed his gratitude to the President, Vice-President and Directors of I-INCE for their effective support to the Organizing Committee; to the organizers of the topics and technical sessions, Chairs and, of course, the distinguished plenary speakers; the Sponsor “Gold”: CESVA Instruments, which also celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, CONGRATULATIONS !; to the “Silver” Sponsors: HEAD Acoustics, Rothoblaas and STO; to all the exhibitors, to Bco Congresos, to Vidyson and to the fantastic group of volunteers of the Polytechnic University of Madrid; and especially I want to acknowledge the great work of my dear friend Antonio Calvo-Manzano, who as Secretary General of the Congress has dedicated many hours, days and months to ensure that everything was perfect. In addition, he has edited the Program and the Proceedings of the Congress , organizing all the manuscripts and allowing the congress program to be in the “cloud” almost two months before its celebration.

Perez-López continued saying that the most important element of the congress was really the dear congressmen, to whom he thanked for his active participation. Throughout these four days we will share with the most advanced research on Noise Control and its different technologies.

Research that will contribute improving the environment by controlling noise: an important objective in modern cities, as reflected in the slogans of the congress: “CONTROL OF NOISE TO IMPROVE THE ENVIRONMENT”. With this objective, we hope you enjoy this annual meeting with colleagues from very different countries of the world, specifically 50 countries are represented in the congress. We wish you all many important exchanges with colleagues who work in your own field or may also be with colleagues in areas other than those that you normally work and that you have not had time to explore !. We also hope you have time to enjoy our city.

And mentioning one of the slides that accompanied his dissertation said: Maybe, now you are wondering why there is a CAT in this slide … To the Madrileños, they call us “cats” … There are different legends that explain the reason of this nickname, but the fact is that we like the night, like cats.

But let’s look at this nickname with “acoustic glasses”, as it has done by the Madrid City Council in its campaign to control nighttime noise, with the motto “We go out without bothering”, the # haptstap Live and allow sleep.

Dear colleagues, we hope you do the same … Enjoy Madrid late, but without making disturbing noises. And of course, remember to go back to the congress in the morning. Thank you very much and we wish you an excellent congress.

After the intervention of Antonio Pérez-López, the Congress Technical Chair and SEA Vice-President, José Salvador Santiago Páez, took the floor to present the most representative data of the Congress, mentioning  that the number of topics on which the technical sessions are structured are 17, distributed in 95 technical sessions, with a total of 894 papers, of which 815 will be presented orally and 79 in poster format, works signed by 2,925 authors. He continues his dissertation commenting that the total number of attendees to the Congress is 1,188, of which 278 are students. He adds that the number of  accompanying persons is 59. Next he presents some explanatory graphs of the distribution of assistants by countries and the distribution of papers by topics.

He adds that prior to the beginning of the Congress, the Courses “Practice of Noise Control School” and “Noise Control in Ducts” and the Workshop “NTP-Erasmus+: Improvement of Environmental Noise Management have been developed on the morning of this day. Skill in Audits “and” From noise outdoors to indoor acoustics; Software tools for the simulation, assessment and presentation of environmental noise and interior sound “

He ends his speech by making a detailed explanation of the Exhibit that will accompany the Congress and that will be integrated by 55 exhibitors representing a total of 61 commercial firms that will occupy a total of 63 stands.

Next, the Vice-President of the I-INCE for Technical Activities, Patricia Davies, takes the floor to present a general overview of the activities of I-INCE and presents the list of the 20 beneficiaries of the travel grants  sponsored by the I-INCE, beneficiaries also fro  20 countries.

Follows in this inaugural act the intervention of the Congress General Secretary and SEA General Secretary, Antonio Calvo-Manzano, presenting the names of the 7 awarded with the Travel Bags sponsored by the SEA, among which are 3 foreign students studying in Spanish universities,  the same as the other 4 Spaniards

He comments below that he has the pleasure of making public the concession of the maximum award that the SEA grants to people and entities highlighted by the development and progress of acoustics, and that on this occasion, by agreement of the Board of the SEA, are granted to Marion Burgess, President of I-INCE, to Joachim Scheuren, and to I-INCE itself, awards that are presented by Antonio Pérez-Lopez

Special mention deserves the concession of the Caracola SEA to the President of the SEA, Antonio Pérez-López,  that is presented by Salvador Santiago and Antonio Calvo-Manzano. After receiving the awards, the winners thank the SEA for the award.

The opening ceremony of the Congress ends with the intervention of the President of the I-INCE, Marion Burgess, thanking the SEA for the work done in its preparation and organization, and wishing all the audience a happy stay in Madrid.

After the opening ceremony, the first Plenary Conference was held, introduced by Jorge Patricio, President of the SPA, and given by Ines López Arteaga of the Eindhoven University of Technology and the Royal Institute of Technology of Sweden, with the title “Rolling noise in road and rail transportation systems”. In her interesting and very animated presentation, Ines commented that “Long term exposure to ground transportation (road and rail traffic) noise is, after air pollution, the main environment-related health stressor in densely populated areas and compromises the quality of life and, indirectly, the life expectations of millions of people. The main source of ground transportation noise at speeds up to 130 km/h in road traffic and up to 300 km/h in rail traffic is rolling noise; noise generated due to the interaction between tyre and road (respectively wheel and rail). Although at first sight noise generation in these two transportation systems might seem unrelated, exploring the common aspects provides valuable insight in current practices for the modeling, prediction and abatement of rolling noise. In this paper the sound and vibration generation mechanisms due to tyre/road and wheel/rail interaction are discussed, focusing on the similarities and differences between the sound and vibration generation mechanisms in these two systems. This perspective is further extended to the discussion of modelling strategies and source characterization methods, with a particular emphasis on the influence of surface roughness on contact force generation, and noise and vibration mitigation measures in both road and rail traffic systems”.

After the Inés López Arteaga Conference, the Choir of the Complutense University of Madrid offered a concert with Spanish musical pieces of three different characteristics: Spanish gold century music, works based on Spanish literature and fragments of zarzuelas. The magnificent performance of the UPM Choir, directed by the maestro Javier Corcuera, was very applauded by the large audience that filled the auditorium of the Municipal Palace.

With a cocktail party, the activities of this first day of the Congress were terminated.

On the second day, the technical sessions developed in 18 rooms began simultaneously, and the Exhibition that, from the first moments and during the three days of the congress, was very visited, opened the doors. The panels of the papers presented in the form of a poster were also housed in the exhibition grounds, which were attended by the authors of the works answering the questions posed to them by those interested in the different topics presented.

The second plenary conference, presented by Oriol Guasch of the La Salle School of Engineering at Ramon Llull University, was given by Stephen A. Hambric of Penn State’s Center for Acoustics and Vibration with the title “To Infinity and Beyond – the Amazing Uses of Infinite Structure Mobility Theory “. He started by saying Stephen “What if there were simple formulae you could use to calibrate structural mobility measurements on beams, plates, pipes, large pressure vessels, aircraft fuselages, and other structures?  What if those same formulae could be used to estimate the mobilities of structures that haven’t been built?  How about using them to estimate how mobility might change if you modify the material properties of an existing structure?  Great news – these formulae exist, are simple enough to code in a spreadsheet in minutes, and are perhaps the most invaluable tools a structural-acoustician has.  They simulate propagating waves in infinite structures, including beams, plates, and curved shells.  In this plenary lecture I will explain these formulae and prove their worth with several practical examples”.

The morning session of the third day of the congress ended with the plenary conference of Jun Yang, of the Academy of Sciences of the University of Chinese, with the title “Sound zone reproduction using loudspeaker array“, which was presented by Michael Vorländer of the RWTH Aachen University. Prof. Yang said that ”Reproduction of a desired sound field over the target region is a hot topic in the research area of the spatial audio. For the multi-zone sound field reproduction (SFR) problem, I) an improved acoustic contrast control (ACC) method using multi-point equalization is proposed to avoid the difficulty of selecting the optimal spatial reference point, II) an algorithm integrated a Least-Square (LS) criteria with ACC constraint is proposed, which tunes the balance between the acoustic contrast and the spatial average error, III) two time-domain ACC design based on response variation and differential constraints is proposed, respectively, which can avoid the causality problem and maintain a flat frequency response in the “bright” zone. Moreover, the issues around ensuring robust performance in SFR systems are studied. A framework for robust SFR design is proposed, which allows a physical perspective on the regularization required for a system, increases robustness of the SFR systems against perturbations, and simplifies the SFR system design. For the single-zone SFR problem, I) an time-domain SFR method using the group Lasso is proposed, which achieves an accurate SFR over the target region using a small number of activated loudspeakers, II) two kinds of block sparse models to interpolate the early part of the acoustic transfer functions (eRTF) are proposed, which can accurately interpolate the broadband eRTF by using a random array containing a small number of microphones”.

A very emotional and deeply meaningful event took place on the afternoon of this third day of the Congress. It was the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Spanish Acoustic Society, an event that marks the long history of the Society born in 1969. The act began with a brief introduction by the General Secretary, Antonio Calvo -Manzano, to give way to the intervention of Professor Emilio Lora-Tamayo, who kindly agreed at the time to the request that was made to participate in this act.

In his speech, Prof. Lora-Tamayo made a prolific and well-structured account of the most important events that have marked the history of the SEA throughout these 50 years, demonstrating his deep knowledge of the trajectory  of the Society in this years.

After his speech, the President of the SEA, Antonio Perez-Lopez, delivers the Caracola SEA, which by unanimous decision of the SEA Governing Council, has been granted in response to the intimate relationships that have existed between the SEA and Prof. Lora-Tamayo and the attentions received from him.

Then proceeded to the delivery of the Andrés Lara Awards that the SEA awards annually to the best work of a young researcher in acoustics and that this time, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary, three prizes have been awarded. Prior to the delivery of these awards, the Vice President of the SEA, Salvador Santiago, made a semblance of the figure of Andrés Lara as a tribute to who was the initiator of the Acoustics in Spain and teacher of acoustic generations that has maintained and enlarged its legacy. For this act, the sister of Prof. Lara was asked to do us the great honour of attending, to which she kindly agreed and this was publicly expressed by Antonio Pérez-López, thanking her for her kindness in accompanying us in this act, offering her a bouquet of flowers.

The three Andres Lara Awards granted to the following authors: Antonio Jesús Aguilar-Aguilera and María Luisa de la Hoz-Torres, Ex aequo, for their work “BIM-based framework for indoor acoustic conditioning in early stages of design“; Roberto Atiénzar Navarro for his work “Effect of the variables associated with the microcapsules on sound absorption after their application to textile fabrics” and Didac Diego Tortosa for his work “Underwater acoustic positioning system for the monitoring of KM3NET optical modules“.

The Luis de Camones Catedra Award from Carlos III University was also presented and awarded to Luis Gascó Sánchez for his work “Noytext: A Web platform to annotate social media documents on noise perception for their use in opinion mining research”

It was very emotional when it was time to hand out the Membership of Merit plaques to 7 councillors who, by decision of the Governing Council of the Society, have earned this distinction for their work in the development of acoustics in general and in a very special way in the SEA. This concession has been granted to Higini Arau Puchades, Francesc Daumal i Domenech, Amando Garcia Rodriguez, Juan Jose Martinez Requena, Plácido Perera Melero, Enrique Riera Franco of Sarabia and Teófilo Zamarreño García. To all of them our most effusive congratulations.

Spontaneously, there were very emotional interventions congratulating the SEA for these 50 years, as were those of Jorge Patricio on the part of the EAA, and of the SPA, Michael Taroudakis on the part of the ICA, Marion Burgess on the part of the I- INCE, Joachim Scheuren and Michael Vorlaender. Jorge Patricio presented a gift to the SEA from the EAA and the SPA, and Elizabeth Gonzalez and Ricardo Hernández, representing the FIA, presented a commemorative plaque. Antonio Pérez-López deeply thanked, on behalf of the SEA, the congratulations and elegies received.

The commemorative act of the anniversary of the SEA ended with the performance of the Ballet Esencia Ibérica, which performed a Spanish classical dance programme, much to the public’s liking and long applauded.

A cocktail put an end to this commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Spanish Acoustic Society that was enlivened by the Tuna of the Complutense University of Madrid.

The last day was developed in the same way as the previous ones, ending the technical sessions with the plenary lecture given by André Fiebig of the Technische Universität Berlin. The conference, presented by Patricia Davies of Purdue University, was entitled “The perception of acoustic environments and how humans form overall noise assessments” and the author comments on it  Human beings recognize patterns out of auditory sensations leading to sound perception. Due to the omnipresence of noise, the perception of noise has a strong impact on the well-being and life-quality of human beings. By means of cognitive processes, meaning is assigned to the world around us following rules with an inherent logic. A specific aspect concerns how humans retrospectively form overall assessments of hedonic or sensational profiles as they experience environmental noise. If humans are requested to provide an overall assessment of an environment regarding for example annoyance, pleasantness or restorativeness, they have to retrospectively assign a magnitude of perception or affective appraisal to the experienced past period. Since experiences of environments typically change over time, a deeper understanding of the cognitive processing of time-variant experiences is strongly needed. This processing is quintessentially contextual affecting auditory sensation, the interpretation of auditory sensation, and the responses to the acoustic environment. Frequently it can be observed that people rely more on patterns and key moments of episodes instead of averaging equally the whole stream of momentary experiences like a sound level meter does. The talk will outline basics of perception and present some insights into the complex mechanisms of forming overall noise assessments. Those insights are relevant for the fields of psychoacoustics, soundscape or even the experience of product sound

After the intervention of André Fiebig ,began the closing ceremony with the interventions of Antonio Pérez-López and Marion Burgess, who thanked all those present for attending the congress, congratulating them on the quality of the papers presented.

Finally, there was a presentation of the main acoustic events that will take place during the rest of the year and next year, such as the ICA 2019, the FIA 2020 and the INTERNOSIE 2020.

The farewell cocktail as usual at the INTERNOISE congresses was offered by the organizers of the next congress that will take place in Seoul in August of 2020.

The organization of the INTERNOISE 2019 MADRID Congress congratulates itself for the happy development of it, apologizing for any possible failure, with the desire to meet again in Seoul in INTERNOISE 2020.

INTERNOISE 2019

To Infinity and Beyond – the Amazing Uses of Infinite Structure Mobility Theory”.

Los tres Premios Andrés Lara concedidos han sido a los siguientes autores: Antonio Jesús Aguilar-Aguilera y María Luisa de la Hoz-Torres, Ex aequo, por su trabajo “BIM-based framework for indoor acoustic conditioning in early stages of design”; Roberto Atiénzar Navarro por su trabajo “Effect of the variables associated with the microcapsules on sound absorption after their application to textile fabrics” y Didac Diego Tortosa por su trabajo “Underwater acoustic positioning system for the monitoring of KM3NET optical modules”.

A Web platform to annotate social media documents on noise perception for their use in opinion mining research
